Unlock the iPhone 4 yourself for free
If you have an iPhone 4 it is pretty easy to unlock for free. It involves a process known as jailbreaking (opening up the software on your phone) and then running some additional software to perform the actual unlock.
The first thing to do is to check that there is an available unlock for the version of iOS and baseband (modem firmware) that you are using, or that there is a downgrade to a supported baseband. To check your iOS version and baseband, go to Settings > General > About on your iPhone.
At the time of writing the latest version of iOS with an available untethered jailbreak and unlock is 5.1.1 (using ultrasn0w 1.2.7) providing you are on one of the following baseband
